  • The Kumure Washing Station is a private wet mill located in the tiny Kumure town in Guji Zone, Oromia. Owned and operated by our long standing partner Tesfaye Bekele, owner of the nearby Suke Quto farm, Kumure serves as a key cherry collection and processing point for many of the 170 organic outgrowers who he works with to process and export coffee from the region.

Tesfaye is one of the pioneers of specialty and organic coffee in Guji, and has built a strong community of likeminded producers in Odo Shakiso and surrounds. Using proceeds from his coffee export business, he has funded the construction of a new school in Kumure to service the village. Since 2015, its 1,200 students have had access to improved facilities allowing for safer, more comfortable and sanitary learning environment.

Our first Ethiopian coffee for the season, we are thrilled to welcome this lot for espresso as a clean, crisp reminder of why Guji coffees are so beloved by our team.

  • Owner of the Kumure Wet Mill, Tesfaye Bekele, is somewhat of a pioneer of the Guji region. He was the first in his community to initiate coffee growing, by creating a seedling nursery on a small plot of land he reserved. He was motivated to show that preserving Guji’s forest was an all encompassing investment for the Guji people. Today, almost all the coffee farms in Guji were inspired by Tesfaye’s Suke Quto farm.

100% of the coffee that Tesfaye handles is Organic, and produced in traditional garden coffee or semi-forested smallholder farms. We have worked with Tesfaye as one of our key Ethiopian partners since 2010, and are glad to continue this relationship into its 14th year!

From 1997 to 1999, vast swathes of the Guji zone (over 5000 forest acres) were destroyed by large bushfires. During this crisis, Tesfaye worked in Natural Resource and Environmental Protection for the government of Ethiopia, responsible for both the Guji and Borena zones. In the aftermath of these horrific fires, Tesfaye took onboard the responsibility to lead reconstruction and find new ways to conserve this important area. Tesfaye realised that he could not stop locals returning to these deforested lands and came up with the idea to replant the forests and add coffee trees to enhance diversity. Today, Tesfaye works with hundreds of producers throughout the Guji zone - particularly in the communities surrounding the Shakiso, Kumure and Uraga villages - to process and export their coffee.
