At only 35 years old, Melvin Alonso embodies the promise of how the next generation of smallholder coffee producers can be a force for change in the coffee industry. The son of legendary organic producer Oscar Omar Alonso, Melvin founded his own farm – named Finca Californeo Junior after his father’s own Californeo – and now grows a small crop of Catuai and Icatuy at 1520 meters outside the municipality of Tierra Colorada in La Paz, Honduras.
Despite being fairly young, Melvin was immersed in coffee farming since his own family started the transition to organic coffee back in 1995. “My motivation has been my father” Melvin told us. “He has instilled in me to manage the soil through organic practices and produce with responsibility”. Constant improvement and responsibility is Melvin’s driving ethos. “We try to produce responsibly, to not pollute the environment, and to motivate people to switch to organic production.”
